Happy Monday babes! We are so excited to start your week off with revealing the family room we designed for Cara Loren’s basement! This is one of my favorite spaces in her basement design because it is so full of style, personality, and color!! When we first met with her and were discussing how she wanted to use her space, the first thing she said about the family room was that she wanted it to feel like another main area to hang out in, and not like a “basement” family room. This was exciting news for us, as it enabled us to do more of a tailored design and really capture Cara’s fun style that runs seamlessly throughout her basement.

We wanted to bring in the modern boho vibes we had been doing in the rest of the basement spaces, and also bring in a little more of a desert feel with reds, pinks, camel leathers, and raw wood tones. We gave the space more life with doing lots of plants throughout the space, and woven baskets to give the space some texture. One of the things Cara really wanted in here was a lot of color, and so instead of doing one large sectional we decided to break it up and do two sofas, and did a paint accent on the walls in the family room. This room is full of layering, color on color, and so much personality!

Last week when we did the reveal for Cara Loren’s kitchen we designed for her, I was confident that the kitchen was my favorite space. But now as I am selecting the images for the bathroom reveal, it is making me have second thoughts! We are so excited to be revealing the most incredible basement bathroom you will ever see.

We put a LOT of thought into designing this bathroom. The original floorplan from the builder had the bathroom as an interior space, with no windows and so no natural light. Everything was closed, crowded, and dark. We proposed to relocate the bathroom so that it was next to one of the exterior walls so that it had access to a window, which then provided natural light. This also opened up the entire basement floorplan, and so everything felt larger and flowed more effortlessly.

Cara’s must-haves for this bathroom included having a freestanding tub, a makeup vanity, and a fun and edgy vibe that flowed seamlessly throughout the entire basement design. We proposed doing a mix of rough textures, heavy patterns, and glam metallics to bring her ideas to life. We did a quarter-sawn white oak on the cabinets with a custom stain, brought in the same heavy veined quartz for the countertop we did in the kitchen, a gorgeous soft-lined free-standing tub, a black metal grid shower door, and a heavy patterned cement tile on the floor to ground the entire design. My favorite part is that with the design becoming mostly black and white, we brought in color through a deep emerald rug that softened up the pattern in the floor, and tied it all together with dramatic velvet emerald drapes.

We had fun selecting the finishes for this bathroom through All Modern, and were pleasantly surprised by the wide selection of tile and plumbing fixtures they had. Everything they had was perfect, and at a fraction of the cost than through other sources.

Hey babes! Some Friday’s are just better than others… and today is one of those days. We are so excited to share the full reveal of Cara Loren’s basement project we have been designing with her over the past year. The first space we are showcasing is her basement kitchen – and it is competing hard to be my favorite space we’ve designed yet.

One of the thing’s I loved most about designing a space for Cara is that she was always open to pushing design boundaries, requested color on color, and has the most unique and awesome personal style that transitioned perfectly into the design vision we captured for her home. For her kitchen, we had enough space that we decided to make it a fully functioning kitchen. It is definitely not your typical “basement” kitchen – and that’s what we love about it the most.

Cara wanted the space to be fun and unique, but most importantly livable and to have an understated effortless vibe. We captured some of her favorite design styles through bringing in patterned cement tiles that we brought in on the back of the kitchen island, and added a touch of drama by bringing the quartz counter-top into a waterfall edge all the way down to the herringbone floor. We added old world charm by tiling the back wall with hand-made black subway tiles, and gave it a fun edge with layering in some glam gold open shelves.

For this project, we partnered with All Modern to source items for Cara’s basement renovation. This was the first time we had used All Modern to source materials such as tile and plumbing fixtures for a design project, and they have now became one of my go-to sources when selecting affordable and good quality materials. They have a great variety, and it is super convenient to shop for a lot of different items all in one place.

Elisabeth’s birthday is coming up in March, and for her birthday she wantsto redesign her bedroom. I am so excited to be a part of designing a fun room that matches her fun and spontaneous personality.

We wanted to design a room that is young and fun, but one that is still sophisticated enough that she will still love in a few years down the road.

Elisabeth’s Must Haves:
1. New Bedspread
2. New paint color
3. Window Treatments
4. Young & fun patterns
5. A growing sophistication
6. Pops of Color

I have been doing a lot of E-Boards lately, which are a great resource to put an entire room together before even purchasing one furniture piece. Gone are the days of repainting and taking back accessories that you decide don’t go with the room once you have it in the space.

Here’s the initial design proposal for her room:

Elisabeth found this black and white bedspread that she really liked. The black and white kept the color palette neutral and classy, and the cityscape and Paris details brought in a fun style.

Black & White Paris Bedding – Bed Bath & Beyond – $89.99-$119.99

Mixing black and white can be tricky, but looks awesome when you can blend the patterns together nicely. We debated on bringing in black and white striped drapes, or a black and white striped rug, and ended up bringing the pattern in through the area rug.

Black & White Striped Dhurrie Rug – World Market – $39.99 – $229.99 (varying sizes)

With all the black and white we were using in the textiles, we needed to introduce our “pop” of color. Wall color is the perfect way to add some warmth and interest when you are designing with a black and white space. We wanted to introduce a soft, but colorful turquoise for the paint color.

Wall Paint Color – Rainwashed SW 6211

To break up all the wall color and soften the black and white, we selected to do a soft-white linen drapery for the window treatment.

Cotton Canvas Grommet Curtain – White – West Elm – $23- $47 (varying sizes) I have also had luck finding linen looking curtains at Home Goods and even Ross.

Now comes the fun part – adding accessories. Accessories can accentuate the style of the room you are trying to achieve, and even though they are the “finishing touches”, they have the biggest impact on the final design of the space. We wanted to bring in some luxe and even a little bit of chic, so we selected gold side tables and lamps with a few faux fur throws and pillows.

3D Gold Geo Stool – Burlap and Denim – $199

Target has a similar one that I have in my personal home, that looks like this:

Threshold Round Metal Honeycomb Accent Table – Target – $79
Kathy Irreland Gold Rodeo Drive Table Lamp – Lamps Plus – $158 (I have also seen similar ones at Hobby Lobby)
White Shag Pillow Cover – Etsy – $40
Ivory Mongolian Lamb Signature Series Faux Fur Throw Blankets – Fabulous Furs – $179

As far as artwork on the walls, I want to do some type of black and white city image in a gallery wall collage like this:

Can’t wait to celebrate Elisabeth’s birthday and for her room to come together. We will see if it looks close to the E-Board I created for the initial design proposal, or if it changes as we go.
Xoxo,
Andrea

Now this is a “Master Suite”

I had the amazing opportunity to do a design remodel for a client in East Kaysville. The family had just moved to Utah, and had found a house in East Kaysville that had been remodeled everywhere except for the Master Bathroom and the basement. For the most part, they loved the house – but needed a few tweaks here and there to make it feel like theirs.First of all, East Kaysville is full of absolutely BEAUTIFUL homes. There is something about the residents of Kaysville that understand and appreciate design. And this family was looking for a Master Bathroom Suite (take note… not just a Master Bathroom… but aSuite) to match the rest of their home. If this wasn’t already enough to get my creative juices flowing… I pulled up for our Design Consult to this…..

Its as if I had left the world of cheap Ikea and designer knock-offs, and stepped into the world of Pottery-Barn look-a-likes and design appreciation all wrapped up in a sophisticated country manor. This house screamed of well-planned and carefully designed everything from head to-toe.

The previous home-owner had hired a Designer and had done an excellent job at remodeling and updating the kitchen, but had seriously overlooked the needs of the Master Bathroom. Here are a few pictures of the house that we used as inspiration to design an immaculate Master Suite while still feeling cohesive to the rest of the design of the home.

So after receiving the tour of the areas that had been remodeled, we arrived at the Master Bathroom. It didn’t even feel like the same house. The charming, open and airy feeling was lost in closed, disjointed spaces with dark and outdated finishes.

Here are the Master Bathroom before pictures:

This is the angle you see right as you walk into the bathroom from the Master Bedroom – straight into a wall, with the bathroom on the right and the closet to the left.
Only one sink for a Master Bathroom, and carpet? Hmmmm…
Another room inside of the side – room. This floor plan was so chopped up and closed! It was a maze just to find the toilet.
Once you were able to find the toilet room, it was in tight proximity to the tub/shower combo.
To the right of the wall upon entering the bathroom, there was a long and dark skinny hallway for the closet.
And if that wasn’t enough for it to be a maze, there was an entire second room at the end of the dark and dreary hallway.
The room at the end of the closet had been originally designed as a Nursery, but this family had no need for a nursery and had converted it into an awkwardly spaced office. This had to go.

Now that I had seen the space, I took the homeowner’s needs and must-haves and converted a dream Master-Suite space plan proposal.

Must Haves:
Large Open Space
Light and airy feel
Large, luxury shower
Better space plan
Design style to match rest of house
Double Sinks

Here is what I did with the floorplan to accomplish the Dream Master – Suite:

1. Knocked-out all walls to create an open floor-plan
2. Added two windows to exterior walls
3. Spaced plan vanity, master shower, private toilet room, and master-walk in closet so that each had adequate space
4. Private toilet room
5. Converted “attached nursery” room to a walk-in closet with stack-able washer & dryer set
6. Large Euro-shower with granite seat & hand-held spa set
7. Freestanding tub (we decided that they would just plumb for a tub for future use, as they didn’t feel that they would use a tub)

Once the floor plan had been designed, we selected light finishes that tied in the design of the rest of the house and continued the charm that they desired.

Moved the vanity to the opposite wall, and added two windows on either side of the Master Vanity
Knocked out all walls to create an open floor-plan with lots of light and a functioning space plan
Natural light through adding two windows
This was the home-owner’s favorite part. A shower large enough to call it a “Master Suite.” With a granite seat, and stone mosaic floor. Euro Shower glass door that extended all the way to the ceiling to create a steam shower.
Mirror Sconces to frame in the vanity

We took these pictures before the towels had been installed, and so here are the towels we used.

Nate Burkus towels from the one and only Target.

Its amazing what a few space-plan techniques and a good color scheme can do to a space. Now the family loves their Master Suite and is excited to continue their remodel in their basement. Stay tuned to see their next project!
